She was born in Sydney, was called "Little Nell" by her father, Ross, a writer, when he referred to her in his family life column. She was never called Nell at home and actually went by the nickname of 'Sonny' (pronounced 'saw-nee') around age 17. She decided to use the name Little Nell as a stage name after her arrival in Britain in the early 70's. Her roles include ''The Rocky Horror Picture Show'' (as Columbia), ''Jubilee'' and ''Shock Treatment'' (as Nurse Ansalong). She starred in ''Summer of Secrets'' (as Kym) and ''Pink Floyd The Wall (film)|Pink Floyd: The Wall'' (as a groupie). She has recorded six singles, including ''Beauty Queen'', ''Fever'', and ''See You 'Round like a Record.'' Campbell has also appeared in several stage productions, including the Off-Broadway play ''You should be so Lucky'' and the Broadway play ''NINE''. She co-starred in a British TV series called ''Rock Follies '77''.
It has been stated that she joined the Australian swimming team for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, but this has not been verified. From the mid-1980s to 1998, she eventually owned three nightclubs in New York, the most famous, started in 1985 called Nell's which she sold in 1998. She has also written magazine articles, including a regular segment in ''Talk Magazine'' in 2000.
She has one daughter, Matilda Violet, born in 1998. Campbell recently returned to Australia after selling her house in Brooklyn to actor Heath Ledger in December 2005. Co-incidentally, Heath's first born child is also named Matilda.
